Native People Count California Announces 2020 Census Native Youth Engagement Initiative Virtual Conference

SACRAMENTO, CA (June 11, 2020) — Today, the Native People Count California (NPCCA) Census campaign announces the statewide Native Youth Engagement Initiative Virtual Conference being held July 24 – 26, 2020.

The Native People Count California Youth Engagement Initiative looks to bring California Native Youth together to educate, empower, and engage in the 2020 Census as leaders and voices of today through social media challenge campaigns, the Virtual Conference, and educational resources.

The Virtual Conference will be hosted online and includes keynote speakers, cultural gathering, Native artist sessions, and more with the goal to educate and engage with our Native Youth to be advocates for the importance of the Census within their communities and starting a dialogue between Native Youth peers on what the 2020 Census means to them.

The Youth Engagement Initiative of the NPCCA campaign is crucial to the success of the 2020 Census as we look to build relationships in our hardest to count communities on and off the reservations of the 110 federally recognized tribes in California and the nearly 800,000 American Indians/Alaska Native people living in the state.

“Today’s youth voice is more powerful than ever,” says NPCCA Youth Facilitator Jeri Brunoe. “Educating and engaging youth in the conversation of the importance of being counted in the Census allows them to educate others, create conversations, and to empower them to honor and sustain their culture while being counted.”

Registration for the conference and additional materials, toolkits, and information for Native communities in California are available at NativePeopleCountCa.org.

About NPCCA

Native People Count California is the official California complete count – census 2020 tribal media outreach campaign. Launched in January 2020 – the Native People Count CA campaign is a collaboration between Governor’s Office of the Tribal Advisor, the California Complete Count – Census 2020 office, and Tribal Media Outreach Partners NUNA Consulting Group, LLC, California Indian Manpower Consortium, Inc. (CIMC), and the California Native Vote Project (CANVP). Native People Count CA was created with the belief that the 2020 Census is an integral piece to upholding the fiduciary responsibility by the United States federal government to Tribes and its delegated authority to state and local governments.
